Happy November!
Fall is finally here and with it comes cooler temperatures. We are suggesting that people keep up on their flea and tick prevention meds as those bugs are bad again this fall. We have had many dogs come in to the shop with ticks that needed removed. Make sure you are checking your pet regularly especially if they like to adventure or play in any tall grasses or weeds.
Please also be on the lookout for skunks as they are pretty active still. We have had a few dogs come in that have been recently sprayed. If your dog does get sprayed by a skunk, please do not put the dog in the bath first. As soon as you get the dog wet with regular water or with soap that does not neutralize the skunk spray, the scent will set and you will smell it for months.
The recipe for Skunk Odor remover at home is pretty easy to make but it does need applied properly. The recipe is for 1 quart of Hydrogen Peroxide, 1/4 cup of Baking Soda, and 1-2 teaspoons of Dawn Dish soap. Do not mix the ingredients beforehand as it is only active for a few minutes once mixed. Get an open container for mixing ready. It needs to be open due to the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda reacting and forming bubbles. If you mix it in a closed bottle, the pressure will build up and you may get a little messy. Anyways, get the dog in the tub then mix your ingredients. As soon as it is mixed up, start applying it to the DRY dog and work it into the sprayed area just like a shampoo. Avoid the dog’s eyes unless 100% necessary and even then please apply the mixture with a rag or cloth. Don’t just pour it onto the dog’s head. Let the mixture sit on the dog for 5-10 minutes then rinse. We give the dog a real bath with shampoo afterwards but that step isn’t 100% necessary, we just don’t like to waste the trip to the tub.
That should take care of the smell pretty well. It works best when done very soon if not immediately after getting sprayed. We hope nobody ever needs this info but reality stinks at times.
Lastly, we have grooming appointments available (including deskunking)!! With our new groomer settling in we have grooming appointments available within 1-2 weeks! Give us a call or tell your friends that are looking for a new groomer for their dogs!
We hope to see you soon!
